Why CIOs Choose Open to Integrate

Hospitals and health systems are undertaking the monumental task of integrating data from multiple sources and across various technologies. According to a recent article by Healthcare Informatics, CIOs are finding such integration easier to do with an open platform. The article features Jim Murry, CIO at UC Irvine Medical Center, and Bill Spooner, CIO of Sharp Healthcare. Both CIOs also shared their thoughts with Modern Healthcare at the most recent Allscripts annual client conference, ACE12. Here’s what they had to say about open:  Open is realistic. “I don’t believe that we will ever find a healthcare environment in which every single system will come from one vendor. I don’t think that’s possible. “ (Bill Spooner, ACE12)  Open is better for complex integrations. “As our clinicians have come to us and asked us – they see the tools – and they […]

ACE12 Final Day

The final day of ACE12 dawned a gorgeous day in Chicago – sunny and not too hot. But the crowd has definitely thinned.  We spoke with several Allscripts clients who were eager to head home to their families and look for ways to apply what they’ve learned. Those who stuck around for Friday’s half day of sessions found some of the best had been saved for last.   The Story of “Open” Among them, David Vawdrey, Ph.D. of Columbia University presented one of the most exciting stories in healthcare IT today.  Vawdrey, Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics, is part of a small team of IT geniuses tasked with enhancing the Sunrise and Enterprise EHR deployments for Columbia’s 1,000+ faculty physicians and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (his colleague, Dr. Peter Stetson, presented at ACE12 yesterday).  NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital includes Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medical Center, and […]

ACE12 Day Two

  • 08/16/2012

Day Two of ACE12 dawned bright and early for some of us.  Thirty-seven early-risers gathered at 6 am outside the Hyatt Regency West Tower for a “Fun Run.” The running enthusiasts (or gluttons for punishment, depending on your point of view) split up into two groups, one going 1.5 miles, the other 3 miles – each led by an Allscripts team member.  Allscripts President Lee Shapiro, a true Marathon Man, and Chief Client Officer Laurie McGraw led the way. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made an unexpected cameo appearance, following up on his Opening Address on Tuesday.  As the group was running along the Lake Michigan waterfront, who should appear dripping from his morning swim but the Mayor himself!  As if he’d been handed a campaign trail prize, Emanuel greeted the runners and gave them a hearty cheer …   The […]

ACE12 Day One (continued)

Once the excitement of seeing all 4,000 of us gathered in one room for Wednesday’s Opening Address had worn off, ACE12’s attendees got down to the business of learning and educating. Some of the educating was of the map-reading variety as attendees went through the usual first-day adjustment to a large conference in an unfamiliar setting.  Some of them even discovered they were in the wrong conference entirely (ACE Hardware is holding its annual convention in McCormick Place this week as well). In between educational sessions, attendees made their way to The HUB — the ACE12 exhibition hall — to ask questions of the Allscripts solution experts and peruse some of the 84 Allscripts partners exhibiting at the conference. The HUB was also the site of the Opening Day Reception Wednesday evening, where, judging from some of the smiles in the […]

And he outlined the city’s […]
