Earlier this year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in collaboration with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), launched Sync for Science (S4S), a pilot program to enable individuals to access their health data and send it to researchers. Allscripts is one of several electronic health record (EHR) companies to participate in S4S, and our FollowMyHealth® patient engagement platform is proving to be superbly architected for this type of collaboration.
First, a little background on what we’re working toward. S4S has two main goals:
Enable individuals to contribute data to the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) Cohort. If people want to support genetic and genomic research efforts, they should be able to easily share clinical data in a structured electronic format.
Accelerate patient data access through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). More regulations are requiring providers to offer APIs, which gives patients more options to view, aggregate and understand their health data.
These goals are aligned with Allscripts’ strengths: We have an industry-leading commitment to both precision medicine and Open APIs. FollowMyHealth is also ready-made for collaborative initiatives like this one. For example, because we have already worked through patient-consent workflows and issues, it’s easy for patients to securely share data through FollowMyHealth with other organizations, if they choose.
S4S is testing vendor capabilities to share a variety of health data, including allergies, immunizations, medication orders, smoking status, problems, vital signs and more. Allscripts currently has all of our data types successfully flowing to the S4S test harness, and we’re passing all of the technical checks.
We are thrilled, but not surprised, to have made this progress in such a short period of time. Because of our long-standing commitment to connecting communities of health, we are able to participate in S4S and other collaborative initiatives without re-engineering our solutions or our approach.
If you are an Allscripts client and would like to learn more about how you can participate in the S4S pilot with us, let us know.
