The Do’s and Don’ts of clinical IT system deployment

Alberta Health Services (AHS) serves nearly four million residents of Alberta and surrounding Canadian provinces. AHS Calgary Zone uses Sunrise by Allscripts™ to improve clinical and financial results in a number of ways (read more about AHS outcomes in a new case study, which you can download for free here.)

Along the way, AHS learned some valuable lessons about how to succeed with clinical IT system deployments. Here are some of the keys to success:

DON’T…

  • Let IT make decisions without clinician input
  • Let vendors draft the strategy and tell you what it costs
  • Under-resource content build, system design, training and support just to save money
  • Chase unrealistic timelines
  • Expect clinicians to automatically accommodate all new technology

DO…

  • Engage leadership in all levels of implementation decisions
  • Keep your organizational commitment and focus
  • Make the deployment the highest priority
  • Align clinical business with IT teams
  • Assess readiness of your people, system and technology
  • Remember lessons learned from previous installations

Getting the implementation right can have long-lasting benefits, including better adoption and clinical outcomes. Sunrise solutions enable the informatics team to work closely with the clinical business to help transform health care, one strategy at a time.

New capabilities enable them to measure key variable elements of care, define best practices, create clinical decision support to standardize care, then measure progress. Jennifer MacGregor is Managing Director for Allscripts Canada sales and operations. In this role, she leads the sales, development, professional services teams in the different regions across the country. Most recently, MacGregor led the Allscripts Professional Services organization across all three regional business teams, where she was responsible for services sales, driving client satisfaction, and creating a consistent methodology throughout the regions. MacGregor began her career with Allscripts in 2005 as a Practice Manager, focusing on computerized physician order entry, outcomes measurement and clinical adoption. Her collaborative leadership enabled a number of clients to successfully implement large scale clinical transformation initiatives. MacGregor’s career progressed as she led the successful implementation of Allscripts solutions at many clients as a Program Director. She also led the regional services team as Associate Vice President Professional Services in both Canada and the western region of the United States, where she had responsibility for ensuring quality outcomes for Allscripts customers. Prior to Allscripts, MacGregor was a Senior Healthcare Consultant with a consulting firm working with Canadian healthcare organizations to develop HIT strategic plans, facilitating regional healthcare leadership initiatives and implementing client solutions. MacGregor has both a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences and an MBA from The University of Calgary.
