8 examples of health IT excellence

I recently served on a panel of judges for Allscripts Client Awards. Reading about all the outcomes, I was inspired by how our clients use Allscripts solutions in a variety of ways to continually improve health care.  It’s proof that our partnership — along with our Open platform — helps clients to achieve excellence in health care.

There were many solid applications, and I’m pleased to share eight great outcomes from our semi-finalists:

Baylor Health Care System (Dallas, TX)

Improving patient safety in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and

Better standardization and efficiency with e-Learning

Patients at Baylor receive full attention when caregivers order, prepare, administer and monitor medication. But the smallest patients in the NICU with tiny custom dosages require additional diligence. Baylor used Allscripts Sunrise Acute CareTM to create 180 new NICU order items, standardize medications and ensure clear labels and instructions. Conversion is complete across five hospitals and clinicians are pleased with the process improvements.

With an emphasis on e-Learning, Baylor has also gained efficiencies. Over the course of one year, the switch to e-Learning helped increase the number of trained physicians before “go-live” from 38% at the first hospital to 98% at the largest most recent hospital.

Blessing Hospital (Quincy, IL)

Achieving efficiencies between departments and throughout the revenue cycle

After a period of shadowing staff across departments, Blessing identified how automation could help achieve optimal workflows and made several changes to its revenue cycle. For example, it used Allscripts Patient Financial ManagerTM to identify accounts that need further review and rout billing edits to the originating department for correction. This change, along with many others, has helped increase Blessing’s clean claim rate from 63% to 86% and improve point-of-service collections by 15%.

Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center (New York City)

Engaging diabetic patients in their own care

Population health management is a top priority for Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, serving a socio-economically depressed population with high rates of diabetes and HIV. Bronx-Lebanon implemented Allscripts Sunrise Clinical ManagerTM to help improve outcomes. For example, caregivers could invite diabetic patients to share a personal goal, decide timing and rate their confidence. The solution helped improve dialogue between provider and patients and contributed to reductions in A1Cs, LDLs and BMIs over a six-month period.

Elmwood Health Center (Buffalo, NY)

Improving ways to measure quality of care, and

Coordinating across the continuum of care

Elmwood Health Center (EHC) used Allscripts Professional EHRTM and Allscripts Practice ManagementTM to integrate the practice’s five specialties, rehabilitative and behavioral health services. The solution helped better measure quality and enabled it to successfully attest to Meaningful Use. Over a six-month period, EHC was able to measure improvements, such as a 12% decrease in rates of LDL tests and 6.5% of patients with hypertension have reduced their blood pressure to normal levels.

Within one year of going live with the solution, EHC earned Patient-Centered Medical Home Level 3 status. Western New York State’s regional health information organization, HEALTHeLINK selected EHC to join with other practices at the forefront of the health information exchange movement. It is an early adopter for a variety of interoperability projects, including the state’s Immunization Information System.

Heiskell, Kings, Burns & Tallman Surgical Associates (Morgantown, WV)

Enhancing staff productivity with a more efficient workflow

This general and vascular surgery practice used Allscripts Professional EHRTM, Allscripts Practice ManagementTM and Allscripts Patient PortalTM to gain efficiencies.  Using these solutions, the practice was able to increase the total number of patients seen each day from 40 to 100, increase surgical procedures each week from 90 to 150 and decrease the average number of days patients wait for appointments from 4 days to 24 hours.

Springhill Medical Center (Mobile, AL)

Improving clinical documentation with a better discharge summary process

Physicians at Springhill Medical Center were dictating discharge summaries. The process was time-consuming and often resulted in incorrect coding, which led to costly delays in billing. Allscripts Sunrise Acute CareTM helped Springhill to quickly pull data from throughout the patient’s visit, including lab and diagnostic results, problem lists and medications. Discharge summaries now take about five minutes to complete – at least a 50% time savings for physicians. At the end of a four-month period, physicians completed more than 6 times the number of summaries as they had before the solution.

What do these semi-finalists have in common? They are dedicated to continually improving health care and sharing their successes with the greater Connected Community of HealthTM.

For the next phase of the Client Awards, our Outcomes team will work with these organizations to further explore results of these efforts. We’ll announce the award recipients in Chicago this August at our annual client experience, ACE13. Congratulations and good luck to all the semi-finalists.

Editor’s Note: This post was updated on June 6, 2013 to correctly identify Patient Financial Manager as the product that Blessing Hospital uses.
