ACE12 Day Two

Day Two of ACE12 dawned bright and early for some of us.  Thirty-seven early-risers gathered at 6 am outside the Hyatt Regency West Tower for a “Fun Run.” The running enthusiasts (or gluttons for punishment, depending on your point of view) split up into two groups, one going 1.5 miles, the other 3 miles – each led by an Allscripts team member.  Allscripts President Lee Shapiro, a true Marathon Man, and Chief Client Officer Laurie McGraw led the way.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made an unexpected cameo appearance, following up on his Opening Address on Tuesday.  As the group was running along the Lake Michigan waterfront, who should appear dripping from his morning swim but the Mayor himself!  As if he’d been handed a campaign trail prize, Emanuel greeted the runners and gave them a hearty cheer …

The Lwala Story Continues

As attendees gathered for the Wednesday keynote by Dr. Daniel Kraft, they were again greeted by Laurie McGraw, who continued what has become an ACE tradition: The naming of one physician and one nurse who will travel to Africa on Allscripts’ dime to spend a week helping the people of Lwala, Kenya.

As we have in the previous three years, Allscripts selected two winners from dozens of applicants:

  • Yvette Crabtree, MD, Sunflower Medical Group, Mission, KS
  • Christina Haag, RN, Bedford Common OB/GYN, Bedford, NH

Allscripts participation in the Lwala story began in 2009, when Fred and Milton Ochieng, the “Sons of Lwala,” delivered the keynote address at that year’s ACE. Their talk was so inspiring that we committed to send one physician client and one nurse client to Lwala to help in the clinic.  Watch the amazing Lwala story unfolding here:

Day Two Keynote

This morning’s keynote was delivered by Dr. Daniel Kraft, a Stanford- and Harvard-trained physician-scientist with over 20 years of experience in clinical practice, biomedical research and innovation. Dr. Kraft chairs the Medicine track for Singularity University and is Executive Director and curator for the FutureMed, a program that explores convergent, exponentially developing technologies and their potential in biomedicine and healthcare.

Dr. Kraft recently founded IntelliMedicine, focused on connected, data driven, and integrated personalized medicine. He is the inventor of the MarrowMiner, an FDA approved device for the minimally invasive harvest of bone marrow,  and founded RegenMed Systems, a company developing technologies to enable adult stem cell based regenerative therapies.

At his ACE12 keynote, Dr. Kraft gave attendees a glimpse into the exciting future of medical prevention, diagnosis and treatment.  Dr. Kraft discussed many innovations, and gave a live demonstration of an iPhone EKG monitor using an app from AliveCor. Almost all were and will be possible because of open operating systems like Apple and Android (not to mention Allscripts!).

Dr. Kraft ended with a discussion of the current and rapidly expanding proliferation of data. Analytics, he said, is the answer. The challenge for the medical profession will be to use Analytics solutions, like Allscripts, to leverage that data.

is there any way to plan a shuttle to the fun run for future ACE conferences? at 6:30, I wasn’t in the mood to navigate the city on my own to get to the fun run, so i just worked out at my hotel.

Good question, Suzanne! I submitted your request to the ACE planning team, who, as you can imagine, are recuperating from their round-the-clock effort to organize the conference. I hope to have an answer for you shortly.

    Hi Suzanne,

I checked with the conference planning team. The Fun Run was an informal event initiated just days before ACE, too late to be included in attendee materials, so we didn’t organize shuttles. I’ve been promised that they will consider making the run a formal part of ACE13.

    Thanks for your suggestion!
